Qualifications
Must have graduated from an appropriately accredited school of nursing
Must be licensed to practice as a professional nurse in the State of Missouri (LPN)
Have an awareness and understanding of children’s and youth’s needs
Have the ability to relate effectively to co-workers and public
CPR Certification
Health Assessments Background Requirements
Vision and hearing screening
Scoliosis screening
Height and Weight screening
Puberty instruction (grades 4-6) and resource information (4-12)
Communicable Disease Control
Communicate with faculty, staff, and students regarding universal precautions
Follow procedure for excluding students with communicable diseases
Arrange for isolation of ill students who are to be excluded
Interpret the immunization law to school personnel and parents
Assess each student’s immunization status and notify parents of deficiencies.
Share responsibility with other staff members in screening those students who are ill or should leave the classroom
Health Guidance and Counseling
Confer with RN, parents and students regarding health concerns
Obtain pertinent health information from parents
Communicate with school personnel regarding health concerns of students
Collaborate with other professionals to assure quality health care for students
Emergency Care of Accidents and Illness at School
Supervise or render first aid care to all students in cases of accidents or illness
Give assistance and direction to parents as needed
Supervise, dispense and document medication according to school policy
Recognize and report any health and safety hazards
Health Facilities and Health Education
Maintain standard health supplies and equipment
Provide health and safety instruction
Serve as a resource person to school personnel
Distribute health resource material to faculty, parents and students
Maintain Records and Prepare Reports
Communicate records with district RN
Daily log of illness/injuries
Immunization Report, CD 31
Other reports required by the RN
Maintain professionalism and plan for professional growth
Maintain confidentiality according to school policy
Attend staff meetings
Collaborate with school and community professionals to promote the school health program
Demonstrate an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
Treat children, parents, and staff with respect and dignity
Maintain strong organizational and interpersonal skills
Demonstrate the ability to work independently, exercise creativity, be attentive to detail, and maintain a positive attitude
